![]() In other words, this is a pretty hot-off-the-presses new feature. This feature is also available on the updated versions of these smart displays, the Echo Show 5 (2021) and the Echo Show 8 (2021), which launched early June. At first, only the Echo Show 10 could pull it off, but a recent update seems to have changed all that and now the first-gen Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8 have a Home Monitoring setting, too. Speaking of the Echo Show 10, it actually wasn't until this iteration of Amazon's flagship smart display that the Home Monitoring feature even appeared in the Alexa app as an option for other devices. If you have an Echo Show 5 in the bedroom, you'll be glad to know it has a physical shutter button to block the camera. Plus, if you have the Echo Show 10, you can not only view the camera feed, but you can pan the room left to right (although, unfortunately, not up and down). ![]() If you just want to check in on things from time to time without having to check your appearance first, Home Monitoring might just replace that security camera you were thinking of buying. Read more: Amazon announced the Echo Show 15 smart display at its September 2021 fall product launch event, along with several other new Echo and Ring products. Do note, however, that the device does display a message indicating that the camera is live and someone is watching remotely, so if it's subterfuge you're looking for, Amazon has a whole host of spy cameras you might consider instead. Instead, you might prefer a more incognito approach when you're checking on people, pets or anything else. But still, it's usefull for checking in on kids, pets or your house while you're away.īut why not just use the Drop-In feature, which does same thing?īecause Drop-In is really just a type of video call, which means the device you're calling displays a video of you, too, and hey, maybe you don't want that. It doesn't record video and you can only put it where you'd otherwise put a smart display (so, no mounting it on the ceiling, unless you're actually Spider-Man). Okay, so Home Monitoring may not be the stuff of superhero origin stories, but it's still pretty nifty as long as you don't need a lot of advanced security camera features. ![]() The setting is called Home Monitoring and it can transform your otherwise milquetoast smart display into a bad-guy-halting security camera. Beneath the mild-mannered facade of a regular, everyday voice assistant, Alexa has an alter-ego - a crime-fighter, you could say - that can be summoned with the flip of a toggle found deep within your Amazon Echo Show's device settings.
